As a future teacher I just have to say that the beginning of the article really got to me and frustrated me as well. When teaching grammar one has to look at it from how they say things and how they are used in a sentence. Teaching grammar with no incorporation is just flat out ridicules. Being in a grammar class here a WSU, I have to see it used on a perspective of people using real life situations, rather than just learning from a set stage perspective. The whole give the student a worksheet and see how it goes is just not the way to teach grammar. If we teach this concept of English in a staged manner, then our students will use it in a staged manner. Examples of “The dog, driven crazy by thirst, jumped over the cliff into the river below. • Driven crazy by thirst, the dog jumped over the cliff into the river below. • The dog jumped over the cliff into the river below because he was crazy with thirst”, sure give a little bit of a incite to grammar, but as stated previously, the way this is being taught is a staged game and I believe we are due for a change. Another thing I would like to add I this paragraph is the argument of tone being an example of grammar. Tone is the way we speak, so why wouldn’t it be good example of grammar. Sure punctuation is the key core fundamental of grammar, but we do all of this to match the way we talk. They both go hand and hand, so why don’t we teach them that way.  

The way I would teach grammar, and this is just my opinion, is thought young adult literature. Books such as Holes, Hatchet, even Lord of the Rings would be fine example of how to teach grammar. Students often times have read these books so they can pick up patterns right off the bat. The basic, generic, examples of teaching grammar sure work for some people, but for most they want to see examples that they know. One thing I would like to start teaching in my classes is using more precise grammar in social media. On social media there is, often times, terrible evidence of grammar, which just so happens is where major discussions of our youth occurs. This goes back into tone as well. The way we talk on social media is very informal so in correcting this with proper tone and grammar would be a great thing for students. Then again I know I am not the best person grammar wise, but I do understand the importance of the concepts. There are many ways for us to teach grammar and relate it to our life’s now.
